Who is Your HERO/HEROINE?

Selecting this question from my Just Ask 1 2 3 card deck as a writing prompt, it was easy to answer.

My mom, Therese, was the fifth child in a strict, French catholic family of eight. Despite the poverty and the constant moving, nothing could dampen Therese’s love for her brother and sisters, her spunk, nor the joy that she had in taking care of other people’s children and the desire to have her own someday. I was lucky, many years later, to be the first of three.

Therese was a dedicated mom and wife, whose grateful attitude, positive approach to life, and her belief in a loving God helped her and her family to withstand some difficult times, including both a flood and fire. Nor was it easy raising three children while running a 7 day a week/365 days a year variety store with her husband.

There are many things that I love about my mom. She sees the best in people and in life, is quick to offer a kind word, and has a prayer list a mile long. I don’t think I have ever heard her say, “I wish I had, I’m unhappy with, I regret…”

She has always been my dearest friend, the person I could go to and share what was going on in my life, especially in the tough times, and really appreciate her wisdom and understanding. She has always been my cheerleader. I could not ask for a better travelling companion, whether I was ‘on the road’ calling on clients or when we shared some wonderful trips together. And during my recent health crisis, my mom was my greatest supporter, along with my loving partner. I know that it’s what helped me through with such ease and grace.

There are MANY who will attest to how lucky I am to have such a sweet and wonderful mom. Throughout her life, Terry has been deeply cherished and sought out by her children, sisters, nieces, nephews, church members and now those in her retirement community for the comfort and joy she offers. She delights in telling everyone her age just to see the shocked look on their faces! Two years ago, Terry celebrated her 90th birthday at her independent living facility with over 70 friends, family and neighbors.

As we age, we all face losses of our loved ones. Terry is no exception, losing both of her parents, her brother and two sisters and more recently her husband of almost 70 years. But she maintains a strong faith and an incredibly positive attitude. Each morning you can hear her singing her prayers with her terrier Jaxson. Following that will be their one mile walk on the beautiful grounds. She is at peace with herself and her life, grateful for each new day.

My mom is my heroine. I am so blessed to have her in my life and treasure every moment that we have together.
