“Life is a gift, love opens it up.” – Jay-Z
Another friend has left this planet, again leaving many of us with a deep sense of loss. As a kirtan leader, Stevie Biegel brought a feeling of oneness into our lives through his music. He and his wife Meredith created a community, based on friendship and love, as they shared their beautiful home and hearts with others. His passing leaves both Francesco and me feeling both blessed to have known him and saddened by his absence.
It is impactful that more and more friends and loved ones are departing, and one day we will be next. It makes me realize just how limited our precious life is. And yet, I can get caught up in the concerns and worries about things that, in the long term, are mostly meaningless. As Shakespeare said, “much ado about nothing”.
I’ve come to realize what a precious gift each moment is with someone I love, each walk in nature breathing in the air given by the trees, and witnessing a sunrise or sunset on this planet earth spinning in its orbit. And thinking about a time in the future when I won’t be here to experience such connections makes each day even more meaningful.
Perhaps the best way we can honor those we’ve lost is to live our lives more fully in gratitude for those we love and to share the best of ourselves with our fellow inhabitants on this planet. How can we help to create a kinder world where each life is seen as the precious gift that it is?

Today is poignant as I celebrate my 6th year of being cancer-free, as well as the last day of chemo for my dear childhood friend, Barbara. My heart is filled with gratitude for the love, prayers, support, and good wishes for health. And soon, I will be celebrating my mom’s 97th birthday, a milestone in a beautiful life.
Many blessings to you and your loved ones,
Linda Commito
