In this increasingly impersonal and divided world, it’s easy to feel discouraged and disheartened. It may seem difficult to find meaningful ways that we can make a difference. Many times, it’s the small, everyday acts of love and kindness that can help us to feel more positive and hopeful.
Kindness can take many forms. There are countless ways to express love, respect, and appreciation. Even the simplest things done with loving intentions can have an immeasurable value, both to the giver and receiver.
The energy behind the action makes the difference. If we let someone cut into our busy traffic lane with irritation or resignation it doesn’t feel the same as inviting someone to get in front of us with a wave and a smile.
And appreciation creates a sense of well-being that is easy to pass on. My friend Francesco says: “when someone acknowledges me with a friendly wave after I’ve just let them in line, it makes me feel happy. It’s as if two people recognize the value of the gesture as a cooperative give and take.”
Little things matter: opening a door, greeting people, paying it forward, taking the time to listen, thanking those who serve you, welcoming a stranger . . .
Let’s find ways to open our hearts a little more during this holiday of love and transform our world one simple, kind and loving act at a time.
Happy Valentine’s Day to you and your loved ones.
